George Egan graduated from high school in 1957 and then served in the military after completing college. Upon terminating his military career, George Egan was hired to serve as a guidance counselor in the Coventry Public Schools at the Coventry Middle School in 1967. In 1975, the middle school was split into Coventry Middle School East and West. George continued to serve in guidance, assigned to West. After another reorganization in 1979, the two middle schools were merged and George continued to serve as assistant principal at the middle school until 1996. At that time, he was asked to become director of guidance at the High School where he oversaw guidance functions and the scheduling of students. He remained in that position until 2002 when he became assistant principal in charge of the Freshman House at the high school. While in this position, he continued to assist with the schedule in guidance which benefitted students greatly as the school was faced with a revolving door with respect to principals. When the principal was placed on leave at the end of 2005, George was named acting principal for the rest of the year giving much stability to the school. George retired at the end of the 2005 school year completing a career that spanned 38 years .
George ran summer school at the middle school level in the 90’s and took over the high school summer school in 2002. In addition George also served as the President of the Coventry Teachers’ Federal Credit Union from its formation until his retirement in 2005. He continues as President of the credit union. His work helped to provide teachers with affordable loans for autos and other purchases which was very helpful to all teachers, but particularly to the younger staff who had to make do with relatively low wages.
One of George’s passions was hockey. George’s first coaching position was as head coach at Ponagansett High School from 1982-85. During his tenure there, the team won the State Hockey Championship in 1982. In 1985, George was named head coach at Coventry High School where he served until his retirement in 2005. George was an inspiring coach who has a great rapport with his players and under his leadership, the team won two state titles, one in 1996 and one in 2003.
In addition to his numerous contributions to the Coventry Public Schools, George also served youth as an employee of Yawgoog Scout Camps for 25 years. He joined the camp in 1963 where he served in a number of positions including the Waterfront Director at Medicine Bow, the Camp Director at Medicine Bow, and eventually reaching the rank of Assistant Reservation Director. In his later years at the camp, he became the purchasing agent for the Camp where he was responsible for purchasing food, supplies and equipment. George was a fixture around the camp and helped a generation of young boys become active citizens of our country. He completed his service at Yawgoog in 1988.
George Egan has given a lifetime of service to the youth of Coventry and to others around the state of Rhode Island. His work as a guidance counselor, school administer, coach, and scout leader demonstrate a lifetime of dedication to youth and qualifies him for induction into the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame.
