It’s hard to believe that this outstanding teacher did not initially pursue a career in education. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Donna Tobin received a degree in Journalism in 1969, and for the first fifteen years of her professional life, worked as a journalist for several newspapers. In 1984, Donna decided to return to school to become a teacher. This decision not only altered the course of her life but also marked the beginning of her impactful thirty-one-year journey of influencing thousands of students in Coventry.
After receiving her Master’s Degree in English Education from Rhode Island College in 1986, Donna began teaching at Coventry Middle School, where she taught 8th grade English for more than 18 years. In 2001, Donna transferred to Coventry High School, where she worked for the remaining 15 years of her career. Her roles as an English teacher, PBGR Coordinator, and English Department Chair at CHS were instrumental in shaping the academic success of the students and the school. During her tenure, Donna played a significant role in implementing the Certificate of Initial Mastery and the Capstone Graduation requirement. Her exceptional work even caught the attention of state educational leaders, who often invited her to present to local school districts about Coventry High School’s success related to proficiency-based graduation requirements.
Throughout her teaching career, Donna Tobin’s commitment to her students extended far beyond the classroom walls. Her mantra, “Work Hard, Be Nice, Go to college, Change the World,” not only encouraged academic excellence but also fostered values of kindness and community impact. Even in retirement, she remains deeply involved in her students’ lives as they consistently invite her to share in their personal milestone events such as graduations, weddings, birthdays, baby showers and more. Donna also continues to be deeply involved at Coventry High School, working as a substitute teacher and always volunteering to support CHS staff and students.
A Coventry resident for over five decades where she raised her four children, Donna has consistently demonstrated her love and gratitude for the town and the school community that played such an important role in shaping her successful career and in providing her children with a quality education. Donna’s influence on her students, her local community and Coventry High School is a testament to her lifelong commitment, passion and dedication to the teaching profession.
