Raymond A. Coppa’s Bio

After graduating from Providence College in 1961, Ray joined the Science Department at Coventry High School shortly thereafter.  During his early years at Coventry, Ray attended New Mexico Highlands University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a master’s in chemistry/physics respectively.  Ray was a dedicated Coventry teacher, spending most of his professional career at Coventry High School. He was appointed Head of the Science Department in the 1974-1975 schoolyear and remained in that position until his retirement in 1996 after 35 years of service.

Over the decades Ray touched the lives of countless students, peers, family and friends with a positive attitude and passion for teaching.  He stimulated the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of many, driven by his own desire to never stop learning.  He truly believed and would often say “if you’re smart in one thing, you’re smart in everything.”

Ray’s passion for teaching and desire to motivate young minds did not end in the classroom.  He spent many years as a facilitator of the Academic Decathlon, where he led teams of Coventry’s best & brightest into competition with other Rhode Island schools on local TV.  He was also an avid golf and tennis player and volunteered as the coach for the boy’s high school tennis team.

Ray also played a role in the work of the CHS Alumni Association as a donor and committee member for the 85th Reunion in 2019.

Unfortunately, Ray left us in October 2021 and is being inducted into the Hall of Fame posthumously.  He would have undoubtedly been extremely honored and happy to be recognized by the Alumni Association.
