A graduate of Rhode Island College with a Bachelor of Science degree,
Michael J. Hobin began his career in Coventry in 1993. After a year at
Coventry Middle School, Mr. Hobin moved to the high school where he taught
general science and physics, developed the popular forensics course and
initiated the Physics Olympics. During his tenure as a teacher Mr. Hobin
served as the Senior Class Advisor to the Classes of 1996 through 2000. In
1999, he orchestrated the first on campus scavenger hunt. The Hunt event was
designed to provide students a safe and fun event around Halloween. To date,
this event has awarded over $50,000 in prizes to students over the past 20
years.
In 2002, Mr. Hobin became an assistant principal at Coventry High School.
Serving over 400 students, Mr. Hobin was responsible for the academic, social,
and emotional well-being for the members of the Class of 2006. During his
tenure as an assistant principal he developed an advisory program for students
and served as department chairperson of the World Language Department.
In 2006 Mr. Hobin was appointed the 10th principal of Coventry High
School. During his tenure, the graduation rate increased from 81% to 93%,
students attending college increased from 61% to 80%, student attendance
rates rose to 95%, Advanced Placement courses offerings rose from four to
fifteen offerings; with a collective 74% pass rate, well above the national
average. Further, enrollment in honors classes doubled, and 50% of the student
body enrolled in at least one CTE course or CTE pathway, with 82% of the
students receiving industry credential or state licensing. Additionally, under
Mr. Hobin’s leadership CHS increased internship opportunities for students;
partnering with NBC10, Electric Boat, physical therapy businesses, nursing
homes and marketing companies.
Most importantly, Mr. Hobin’s tenure at CHS was marked by admiration
from students, staff and community members. Mr. Hobin truly knew and
cared deeply for his students, and in turn they respected his leadership and
guidance. The legacy of successful leaders lives on through the people they
touch along the way. As principal, Michael Hobin permanently changed the
hearts of the students and staff he led.
In 2007, Mr. Hobin was named the Rhode Island First Year Principal of
the Year and in 2013 he was named Rhode Island High School Principal of
the Year. In 2014, he joined 50 educators and Lifetouch employees to build
a vocational school in Constanza, Dominican Republic as a Lifetouch
Memory Mission Volunteer. He has been a board member of the Rhode
Island Association of School Principals, currently serving as the President
through June, 2020.
Mr. Hobin, the embodiment of an Oaker, resides in Cranston, Rhode
Island with his wife and two children, Nicholas and Rebecca.
